Targets and roadmaps

Develop your net-zero target and your own realistic emissions reduction pathway – we will provide structured guidance and support. This is your basis for a clear, coherent climate strategy.

Targets

Organisations that sign a voluntary commitment undertake to pursue exemplary net-zero targets. Enterprises are also free to set net-zero targets in line with the EEC 2040 outside the framework of the voluntary commitment. Organisations are expected to pursue the following targets:

  • Scope 1 (direct emissions): net zero by 2040 at the latest
  • Scope 2 (indirect emissions from the procurement of purchased energy): net zero by 2040 at the latest
  • Scope 3 (upstream and downstream emissions): net zero by 2040 to the greatest extent possible. Alternatively, organisations may set ambitious interim targets for 2040 or other individual targets.

Organisations are also expected to set ambitious development goals for solar power generation at suitable sites and properties under their control. The goal is to harness the technically viable potential to the greatest extent possible by 2040.

Roadmaps

A net-zero roadmap sets out how targets are translated into action while specifying the emissions reduction pathway for Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions. The roadmap includes specific, quantifiable measures such as the decarbonisation of buildings and vehicle fleets alongside interim targets. Likewise defined in the roadmap is an organisation-specific deployment pathway for negative emissions technologies (NET) in order to address emissions that are difficult to avoid.

We provide a practical tool free of charge to support the development and tracking of roadmaps.

Detailed guidance and requirements relating to targets and roadmaps can be found in the EEC 2040 concept. The relevant legal principles are set out in Article 5 of the Climate and Innovation Act (CIA) and in the Climate Protection Ordinance (CPO).
