Swiss Post

The picture shows a Swiss Post delivery vehicle.

Swiss Post is a mixed group that operates in the communications, logistics, financial services and passenger transport markets. Its services range from the delivery of letters, parcels and newspapers to freight logistics, courier and express services, and digital information solutions for the healthcare sector, public authorities and businesses. With around 46 500 employees in Switzerland, Swiss Post is one of the country’s largest employers. The Universal Postal Union named Swiss Post the ‘best postal service in the world’ for the eighth consecutive year in 2024.

Swiss Post, as a participant, comprises all the strategic companies in the group with the exception of PostFinance and PostBus. These both feature as independent participants.

Energy and climate

As a major logistics company, Swiss Post has particularly strong leverage when it comes to reducing CO2 emissions. It achieves the greatest impact with its ambitious climate and energy targets.

Today, Swiss Post delivers letters and parcels in the cities of Zurich, Bern, Geneva, Basel, Winterthur, Thun, Uster and Lucerne using only electric vehicles. Its in-house operations will be completely climate-neutral from 2030. To achieve this, it is converting its vehicles to alternative drive systems, plans to heat 80 per cent of its buildings without fossil fuels and obtains all its electricity from renewable energy sources in Switzerland. From 2040, the entire value chain will also be climate-neutral, making the company as a whole net zero. This target is in line with the specifications of the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) and will help to limit global warming to 1.5°C. Specifically, this means that we will reduce emissions by at least 90 per cent and remove and store the rest from the atmosphere (base year 2021).

Targets

Under the EEC initiative, Swiss Post has pledged to meet the following targets:

1. Increasing energy efficiency

Benchmark: 2021

  • Target for 2026: +15%
  • Target for 2030: +50%

2. Switching to renewable energies

Thermal energy and fuels

  • Target for 2026: 19% renewables
  • Target for 2030: 38% renewables

Electricity

All Swiss Post’s electricity already comes from renewable sources.

3. Producing green power

Photovoltaics

  • Production in 2021: 8.8GWh
  • Target for 2030: 26MWp

This data applies to the entire Swiss Post Group.

Measures

Like all the participants, Swiss Post has undertaken to implement the joint measures. In addition, Swiss Post is also implementing the following individual measures:

1. Net zero from 2040 onwards
Group target for 2030: Swiss Post’s in-house operations to be climate-neutral (emissions to be reduced by 42 per cent compared with 2021, the remaining emissions are to be removed from the atmosphere and stored)

2. ‘pro clima’ shipment
2030: 150,000t CO2 offset

3. Certified green electricity for electric vehicles and post offices
2030: 106GWh
