University hospitals
Between them, the 53 000 employees of the university hospitals in Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich carry out almost five million outpatient consultations and treat over 240 000 patients a year using the latest treatment methods. Besides staffing and financial resources, these services also require a considerable energy input: the annual energy consumption (electricity and heat) of the four university hospitals is 575 gigawatt hours, which more or less equates to that of a town with 35 000 inhabitants, such as Uster or Sion. The university hospitals joined EEC as a group in autumn 2023.
Targets
Under the EEC initiative, the university hospitals have pledged to meet the following targets:
1. Increasing energy efficiency
Benchmark: 2018/2019
- Target for 2026: +5%
- Target for 2030: +17%
2. Switching to renewable energies
Thermal energy and fuels
- Target for 2026: 48% renewables
- Target for 2030: 62% renewables
Electricity
- Target for 2026: 100% from renewable sources
3. Producing green power
Photovoltaics
- Target for 2026: 4.5GWh
- Target for 2030: 7.8GWh
Measures
Like all the participants, the university hospitals have undertaken to implement the joint measures. In addition, the university hospitals will be taking individual measures to reduce the amount of energy consumed by medical equipment, reduce meat consumption and/or promote a diet rich in plant proteins, reduce waste and integrate climate issues into purchasing procedures. Targets are currently being set.
